PUNE: At least one candidate in the civic elections seems to be taking the deplorable condition of roads in the city seriously.
Independent candidate Rajesh Shende, president of Akhil Law College Road Parisar, contesting from the Law college ward, has opted for the 'road roller' as his election symbol. Shende feels that as the citizens have been facing tremendous hardships because of the bad roads, they'll easily identify with the road roller.
"My symbol says it all.

For at least a year, residents of this ward and I have been crying hoarse over the road situation. We faced a lot of problems during the monsoon. When things did not improve, I thought the 'road roller' would be a good way to connect with the people," Shende said. What's more, Shende even intends to use a road roller while campaigning in his ward.
Another candidate, Archana Pawar from Homi Bhabha hospital ward, has also been allotted the 'road roller' as an election symbol. While major parties like the Congress, NCP, BJP and the Shiv Sena have their respective party symbols, independent candidates had to submit preferences from 72 free symbols declared by the state election commission.
Most candidates showed a preference for symbols like the 'cup and saucer', the 'aeroplane', 'cooking gas', 'kite', 'television' and 'pressure cooker', some candidates did choose the more unlikely a 'finger-ring', 'coconut', 'letter box', 'nagara' and a 'batsman'.
